What to Expect on a Food Tour
Have you ever heard of a food tour? Here’s what to expect if You’re about to do your first!
You may have heard of us over here at Monterey Bay Food Tours, but if you haven’t, well hello! Since we’re Monterey’s first, we find that a lot of locals who join us have no idea what a food tour even is before they find us.
While we’re flattered we’re their first, there are so many food tour options in the world, we’d hate for any of them to go unnoticed!
If you love food, culture, and learning about the ins and outs of the city you’re either living in or visiting, a food tour is a great excursion to get out and see what the city has to offer.
If you’re a local, it opens up an opportunity for you to find your new favorite haunt, and maybe even learn a thing or two that you didn’t know about where you live. We know locals are always surprised by what they didn’t know about Monterey when they join us, and we’re sure it’s the same in other cities around the world.
Visitors, of course, get the chance to get a quick peek at the food scene in the town they’re visiting, and it opens up the opportunity to find the places you’ll spend most of your time on the visit. It may take you someplace you’d initially be wary of that could turn into the best food you’ve ever tasted!
Different Food Tours, Different Experiences
Some of the top food tours in the world include Berlin Food Stories, Foods of Copenhagen, Little Adventures in Hong Kong, and the Made in Canada Culinary Adventure. Of course, that hardly even scratches the surface! Chances are, there’s a food tour in your town, and if there’s not, we always encourage you to start one of your own!
Those visiting the crystal gem of a coastline in Monterey can always enjoy our Old Monterey Food Tour. If you’re further north in the Santa Cruz area, check out the Santa Cruz and Capitola Food Tours. Additionally, if you’re in the San Francisco area, be sure to check out Stretchy Pants Food Tours or Gourmet Walks (this one also has a chocolate tour!) Further south from Monterey lands you on Carmel Food Tours, so there’s plenty to choose from over here, too!
What Does a Food Tour Include?
Typically, a food tour consists of stopping at various historical markers along a particular route in a town, and eating at the restaurants in between. The idea is to learn the history of the area and what led to the way it thrives in the current day.
Of course, tours differ depending on the city and tour option of your choice. Be sure to sign up for the tour that sounds most appealing to you to maximize your experience!
Usually, all food and drinks are included. Depending where you go and what you do, you may have the opportunity for add-ons like extra drinks. You generally need anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to experience a food tour, so make sure to leave yourself some wiggle room in case things get interesting (or in case there’s extra food on that day).
What Tours Do You Offer?
We here at Monterey Bay Food Tours offer our Old Monterey Food Tour on a rotating basis from Thursday-Sunday starting at 11 pm. They usually last around 3.5 hours, and many happy foodies end up canceling dinner reservations after spending the afternoon with us.
We also offer a Haunted Monterey Food Tour at night, but dates are more scarce for that. Be on the lookout for our Cannery Row Food Tour and Old Monterey Evening Food Tour, too. Those are both coming soon as public tours, but are currently available now as a private tour. Make sure you sign up for our newsletter to be the first to know when the dates are available, and after the long, cold winter, dates will increase.
Of course, you could always schedule a private or a custom tour for any event or memory you’re trying to create. We’re great for corporate getaways and bachelor/bachelorette parties. We’re even great for bride and grooms who want an affordable way to taste some local cuisine! Our custom tours can incorporate much more than the general tours, so be sure to contact us for quotes and ideas.
